About Ooty

Ooty — Udhagamandalam — is the best-known hill station in South India, sitting at about 2,240 m in the Nilgiris. Tea estates, a colonial-era botanical garden, a lake, and the narrow-gauge mountain railway that grinds up from Mettupalayam. It is busy in season and that is part of the character; groups who want the same hills with fewer people usually take Coonoor as well, half an hour down the road.

Ooty — common questions

When is the best time to visit Ooty?

April and May are the classic season — it is why hill stations exist — but they are also the most crowded and the most expensive. October to March is cold, clear and far quieter, which many groups prefer. July to September is the south-west monsoon and views are often closed in.

Should we book the Nilgiri Mountain Railway in advance?

Yes, if you want it. The toy train is UNESCO-listed and seats sell out well ahead in season, particularly the Mettupalayam to Coonoor leg. Tell us at the planning stage and we will fit the rest of the itinerary around the train timings rather than the other way round.

Is Ooty good for a school or college group?

Yes, and it is one of the more common requests. The botanical gardens, the tea factories and the railway give a trip real content, and the distance from Kerala is manageable in a day's drive. We handle supervised transport, group stays and meals for student groups.
