About Mysore

Mysore is the old seat of the Wodeyar kings, and the Amba Vilas Palace is the reason most groups come — particularly on Sunday evenings and through Dasara, when it is lit with close to a hundred thousand bulbs. Beyond the palace there is Chamundi Hill above the city, the Brindavan Gardens below the Krishnarajasagara dam, and a compact, walkable centre. It is also the natural hub for Coorg, Bandipur and the Hoysala temples.

Mysore — common questions

When is Mysore Palace illuminated?

On Sunday evenings and on public holidays, and every evening through the Dasara festival in September or October. If the illumination is the reason for the trip, the itinerary has to be built around a Sunday — it is the single most common thing groups are disappointed to miss.

Is Mysore a good base for the rest of Karnataka?

Yes, it is the obvious one. Coorg is about 120 km away, Bandipur and Nagarhole are within easy reach for wildlife, and Belur and Halebidu are a few hours north. Most of our Karnataka itineraries route through Mysore for that reason rather than treating it as a single stop.

Do you plan school trips to Mysore?

Yes — it is one of the most requested school destinations, because the palace, the zoo, the gardens and the railway museum give a group several full days of content without long drives between them. Supervised transport, group accommodation and meals are arranged end to end.
