About Belur

Belur's Chennakeshava Temple took over a century to build and is covered, almost without a gap, in carved soapstone — friezes of elephants and horsemen running around the base, bracket figures under the eaves, and detail fine enough that individual bracelets are cut through. With Halebidu 16 km away and Somanathapura, it was inscribed as the Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysalas on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2023. This is a destination for people who want to look at one thing properly.

Belur — common questions

Do you need a guide at Belur?

It makes a substantial difference. The carving is dense with narrative — episodes from the epics, and signed work by individual sculptors — and almost none of it is self-explanatory. Licensed guides are available at the temple, and for group tours we arrange one in advance rather than leaving it to the gate.

Should Belur and Halebidu be visited together?

Yes. They are 16 km apart, they were built by the same dynasty within a few decades of each other, and they are two parts of the same UNESCO inscription. Seeing one without the other is the usual regret. Together they are a comfortable single day.
