Pallava rock-cut temples on the shore, carved in the 7th century

- Best time to visit
- November to February. It is exposed and there is little shade among the monuments, so summer visits mean early mornings.
- Typical trip length
- Most itineraries run 1 night, or a day from Chennai.
- Getting there
- Approx. 570 km from Kottayam, around 10–11 hours by road. Almost always part of a Chennai and Pondicherry itinerary.
About Mahabalipuram
Mahabalipuram — Mamallapuram — was a port of the Pallava dynasty, and what survives is a group of 7th and 8th century monuments cut directly out of the granite: the Shore Temple standing at the waterline, five monolithic rathas each carved from a single rock, and one of the largest bas-reliefs in the world. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984, and it sits an easy hour and a half from Chennai on the coast road.

EnquireMahabalipuram — common questions
Can Mahabalipuram be done as a day trip from Chennai?
Comfortably. It is about 55 km down the East Coast Road, roughly an hour and a half each way, and the monuments are concentrated enough to see properly in a day. Groups who want an unhurried morning at the Shore Temple usually stay a night instead.
Is Mahabalipuram suitable for a school group?
It is one of the better heritage destinations for students — the monuments are outdoors, walkable, and the rock-cut technique is visible in the unfinished works, which makes the history legible rather than abstract. We arrange guides for school groups so the visit is structured rather than a walk-around.
