About Pondicherry

Pondicherry is a former French colony on the Coromandel coast, and the part people come for is the French Quarter — mustard-and-white houses, bougainvillea, street signs still in French, and a seafront promenade that closes to traffic every evening. Auroville, the experimental township just outside town, gives the trip a second half that is quite unlike the first. It is a walkable, low-effort destination, which makes it easy to pair with Mahabalipuram and Chennai.

Pondicherry — common questions

Do you need to book Matrimandir in advance?

Yes, for the inner chamber. Viewing the Matrimandir from the designated viewpoint is straightforward, but entry to the inner chamber has to be arranged in advance and the number of passes each day is limited. Tell us at the planning stage if it matters to your group and we will build the timing around it.

How does Pondicherry combine with other destinations?

It sits naturally on a Tamil Nadu coastal route. The usual shape is Chennai, then Mahabalipuram for the shore temples, then Pondicherry — the three are on the same road within about 150 km of each other, so one trip covers a city, a UNESCO heritage site and the French quarter.
