About Chennai
Chennai is the entry point for most of Tamil Nadu and a destination in its own right: Fort St George, the first English fortress in India; the Kapaleeshwarar temple in Mylapore; Marina Beach running for kilometres along the front; and a museum and music scene that reward more than a stopover. It is where most Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry itineraries begin, and it is well connected by air and rail from Kerala.

What is the usual Chennai itinerary shape?
Two nights in the city for the fort, the museum, Mylapore and the Marina, then down the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram and on to Pondicherry. The three are within about 150 km of each other, so one trip covers a city, a UNESCO site and the French quarter without long drives.
Is Chennai worth stopping in, or just passing through?
Worth stopping. Fort St George and the Government Museum's bronze gallery are both genuinely significant, and Mylapore is one of the better-preserved old quarters in a South Indian city. Groups that treat Chennai purely as an airport tend to regret it.
